New Sliding Head Machine added to Group Asset list

Camtech Precision Engineering are pleased to announce a new sliding head machine, SR-32J, by Star. This is the first of 5 to arrive to cope with the new business, including the full specification pack.

We are pushing the boundaries of British engineering once again with the addition of this Computer Numerical Control (CNC) sliding head lathe that significantly improves the accuracy, rigidity, reliability, efficiency and repeatability of CNC machining. Offering highly accurate and consistent multi-axis capabilities, the sliding head lathe machine is able to simultaneously process turned parts in a single setup at great speed and lower production costs. Machining complex geometries at extremely tight tolerance makes this machine perfect for quality-critical enterprises such as the automotive, race technology, pharmaceutical, medical, oil and gas, and aviation industries.

Newly developed technology in the Swiss-type sliding head lathe enables exceptional performance and versatility. It is used for machining complex, large-diameter components. The 5-spindle cross drill unit boasts an upgraded power tool motor, a movable operation panel, a slanted sliding guideway and a high-power spindle motor, designed for machining delicate and highly accurate precision parts. This type of lathe was originally used to machine the very intricate parts used to make watches, which gives you an idea of how tight the tolerances this machine is capable of achieving. This does not, however, detract from the robust and powerful tools that are capable of heavy duty machining on tough materials, achieving the same level of intricacy and complexity.

Benefits of Sliding Head CNC Machining

Key features of sliding head technology include the significant reduction in production times compared to other technologies such as fixed head machining. The cutting tools in a sliding head machine are positioned very close to the workpiece which reduces non-cutting idle time, while the sub-spindle allows operations to be overlapped to further reduce cycle time.

The flexibility of sliding head machines typically enables components to be produced in a single setup which removes the need for additional operations and machine operators. These machines are also able to operate unmanned overnight which significantly reduces process times and cost per part.

The sliding head lathe machine can be used for a variety of applications such as turning, milling, drilling, boring, grooving, cross drilling, and screw-cutting. This type of versatility is hard to match, as is the availability of 7 axes with a standard machining diameter of 32mm, a slant-type guideway structure for stable heavy-duty cutting, a Z1 stroke of 310mm, six 16mm turning tools, five cross-working power tools, and four back-working power tools, a movable operation panel with Fanuc 32i-B control, and C-axis control on main and sub-spindles.
